Train for a career as a Power Line Technician. Power Line Workers enjoy the vitality of working outdoors, the freedom of working independently, the security of a growth industry, and a lucrative income.
This 12-week foundations program will prepare students for a career as a Power Line Technician and increase their eligibility for apprenticeship as a Power Line Technician. This program includes both classroom and hands-on training, and meets all applicable regulations and standards.
PROGRAM OUTLINE:
Power Line Technicians construct, maintain, and repair overhead and underground electrical power transmission and distribution systems. This involves putting up and maintaining electrical poles, towers, and guy wires as well as installing or repairing live-line wiring on voltages up to 500 kV. To perform these tasks, Power Line Technicians typically require the physical stamina and the psychological aptitude to work at great heights, in harsh weather, and occasionally in remote, rugged terrain.
This 12-week, full-time program (38.5 hours per week: Mon-Thurs: 7:30am to 4:30pm; Fri: 7:30am to 1:00pm) will prepare students for entry into the high voltage electrical energy industry. This comprehensive 12-week program includes:
CLIMBING
OUTLINE:
In this course students will learn about the care and use of climbing equipment, and demonstrate climbing on wood and steel structures, along with working on elevated platforms. The course will also describe the testing for pole (structure) stability.
ASSESSMENT:
Student assessment is by means of quizzes, homework assignments, practical assessments, and one exam upon completion of the course. A combined minimum of 70% is required to achieve a passing grade.
POLICY AND REGULATIONS
OUTLINE:
This course will introduce students to the safety regulations, personal protective equipment, and how to recognize levels of training involvement. The course also introduces the student to perform rescue procedures and demonstrates firefighting procedures along with being able to recognize and observe limits of approach.

TOOLS AND INSTRUMENTS
OUTLINE:
This course demonstrates the care and use of hand and power tools and test instruments. The course will also describe the care and use of live line tools.

ELECTRICAL THEORY
OUTLINE:
This course will describe electrical fundamentals, the operation of single phase motors and generators: transformation (single phase) and metering (single phase, primary, secondary).

EQUIPMENT
OUTLINE:
This course will identify types of line equipment as well as demonstrate the care and use of hydraulically equipped vehicles.

RIGGING
OUTLINE:
This course will describe work, force and mechanical advantage as well as identify and demonstrate lifting components.

OVERHEAD DISTRIBUTION
OUTLINE:
This course will prepare the student to identify and select materials for a given project; identify line status and construct and maintain distribution lines.

Student assessment is by means of quizzes, homework assignments, practical assessments, and one exam upon completion of the course. A combined minimum of 70% is required to achieve a passing grade.
UNDERGROUND DISTRIBUTION
OUTLINE:
This course will prepare the student to identify and select materials for a given project; identify line status.
ASSESSMENT:
Student assessment is by means of quizzes, homework assignments, practical assessments, and one exam upon completion of the course. A combined minimum of 70% is required to achieve a passing grade.
CERTIFICATION
Students must successfully complete the program with an academic grade of 70% or higher. (See course details for specific information). Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive a program completion certificate from the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) and EITI Global, as well as a transcript of their marks.
PREREQUISITES
Course Prerequisites
- Complete EITI/UFV Orientation Session (recommended).
- B.C. secondary school graduation or equivalent, or 19 years of age and out of secondary school for at least one year as of the first day of classes.
- Physical strength and mobility to complete the course (recommended).
- No fear of heights.
Career Prerequisites
Employers may require that you also meet the following criteria:
- English 12 or equivalent.
- Mathematics 11 or equivalent.
- Physics 11
- Class Three Commercial Driving License
- Air Brakes Endorsement

Upon acceptance into the program, registrants will be supplied with an invoice for PPE, Hand Tools, Climbing Gear, and Manuals. The amount is due to EITI. Other than boots, all the supplies you require for the program will be provided through EITI for you to keep. This amount is non-refundable.
The tuition amount is payable to UFV at the time of registration. Program registration details will be emailed out to all accepted students, once registration opens.
